South Yarra is channelling the vibrant energy of Sesame Street through a major new exhibition by acclaimed Melbourne artist David Bromley. Titled In Your Neighbourhood: Bromley x Sesame Street, this landmark show marks the first time the beloved children’s program has collaborated with an Australian painter.
The exhibition features over 50 original works that reimagine iconic characters like Elmo, Cookie Monster and Big Bird through Bromley’s distinctive artistic lens. Created across 18 months in his Windsor and Daylesford studios, the collection includes large-scale paintings alongside ceramic pieces and even surfboards – all infused with Bromley’s signature style and the playful spirit of the globally adored TV series.
“I think ‘yes’ came out of my mouth halfway during the sentence of being asked,” Bromley recalled of the collaboration opportunity to Nine News.
The artist became so immersed in the project that he joked about losing himself in the Sesame Street universe, describing the works as “a big warm hug holding you” that evokes childhood nostalgia.
Following its Melbourne debut, the exhibition will tour nationally with all pieces available for purchase. This unique fusion of pop culture and fine art brings together two creative powerhouses – Bromley’s contemporary aesthetic and Sesame Street’s timeless appeal – for what promises to be one of the year’s most joyful artistic experiences.
Sesame Street x Bromley In your Neighbourhood runs from Friday 6 June to Sunday 13 July at Bromley Gallery, 247 Toorak Road, South Yarra. Find out more here.
