Melbourne has once again proven its global appeal, officially ranked the fourth most liveable city in the world in the 2025 Global Liveability Index by the Economist Intelligence Unit. This comprehensive ranking of 173 cities evaluates stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure—areas where Melbourne continues to shine.
Topping the list this year is Copenhagen, followed by Vienna and Zurich.
Melbourne leads the Australian pack in the global top five, reaffirming its reputation as a city that blends efficiency with cultural vibrancy. It earned near-perfect scores for education, infrastructure, and healthcare, underscoring the strength of its public systems and civic amenities.
While affordability and housing remain ongoing challenges, the city’s vast green spaces, integrated public transport, and rich artistic and culinary life make it a consistent favourite among global urban centres.
Australia’s strong showing doesn’t stop there. Sydney claimed sixth place, showcasing robust public services and cultural amenities. Adelaide also broke into the top 10, securing ninth place thanks to its steady improvements in stability and infrastructure. These three make up the Australian trio in the global top 10.
