Malthouse Theatre has revealed the seven names set to star in the Australian premiere of ECHO: Every Cold-Hearted Oxygen, the international theatrical phenomenon by Iranian playwright Nassim Soleimanpour.
From 14–19 July, actors Ben Lawson, Pia Miranda, and Nadine Garner; comedian Michelle Brasier; journalists Jan Fran and Stan Grant; and musical theatre star David Campbell will each deliver a completely unrehearsed solo performance at Merlyn Theatre—guided in real time by Soleimanpour from Berlin and director Omar Elerian.

Described as a “long-distance magic show,” the 90-minute production synchronises live technology with raw spontaneity, creating a fleeting connection between performer, playwright, and audience. Soleimanpour’s signature “cold read” format—previously performed by luminaries like Emilia Clarke and Benedict Wong—thrives on unpredictability.
“It’s the most alive theatre can get,” says Soleimanpour. “Imagine watching a football match where you already knew the score. That’s why we don’t spoil it!” Elerian adds: “Melbourne will love that sense of discovery.”
The original creative team, including designers Derek Richards and Jackie Shemesh, reunites for this strictly limited season. With no two nights alike, ECHO promises a theatrical experience as singular as its stars.
