One of Australia’s most revered actors, Noni Hazlehurst, brings her extraordinary talent back to Arts Centre Melbourne in The Lark – a powerful new solo work exploring memory, loss, and the places that shape us.
From 3-20 September 2025, this world premiere production reunites Hazlehurst with playwright Daniel Keene (Mother) and award-winning director Matt Scholten, marking another profound collaboration between three of Australia’s finest theatre makers.
Set in Melbourne, The Lark tells the moving story of Rose Grey, a 75-year-old woman facing the impending demolition of the inner-city pub that has been her lifelong home. As she grapples with her final goodbye, Rose is overwhelmed by memories – both joyous and painful – that tether her to the building more powerfully than she realizes.
“The opportunity to work with Daniel and Matt creating Mother was a rare privilege and a joy. To have the chance to collaborate again on The Lark is a miracle. No actor could ask for more,” said Hazlehurst.
Keene’s writing shines a light on Melbourne’s changing cultural landscape while providing the perfect vehicle for Hazlehurst’s remarkable emotional range. “The play is both a celebration of and an elegy for a very particular place in our shared cultural landscape,” Keene explained.
With a career spanning 50 years – from Play School to A Place to Call Home, and countless acclaimed film and stage roles – Hazlehurst brings unparalleled depth to this intimate, deeply human story. Don’t miss this chance to witness one of Australia’s greatest actors in a role written specifically for her extraordinary talents.
