The Australian Border Force is expanding its popular Detector Dog foster program to Ballarat and Whittlesea, giving more Victorians the chance to help raise puppies that will one day protect Australia’s borders.
Following successful placements in Melbourne and Geelong, the ABF is looking for foster families to care for future detector dogs from just nine weeks old. These puppies will eventually work at airports, seaports and mail centers, sniffing out drugs, weapons and other illegal items.
“You don’t need any special experience – just a secure yard, some free time and plenty of love to give,” said ABF Superintendent Allister Keel.
“We provide all the food, vet care and support you’ll need, including puppy sitting when you go on holiday.”
Foster families play a crucial role in the puppies’ development by introducing them to different people, places and experiences. Carers just need to attend three training sessions a year at the ABF facility.
Since starting in Melbourne in 1993, the program has trained thousands of dogs now working across Australia.
“It’s incredibly rewarding to watch a puppy you raised go on to protect our community,” Keel added.
“Every puppy raised helps make Australia safer,” Keel said. “We’re excited to welcome new families in Ballarat and Whittlesea to this important program.”
