School’s out – and the community is in, thanks to a new pilot unlocking after-hours access to gyms, ovals and classrooms across Melbourne’s booming west.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Education Ben Carroll today announced a $1.4 million initiative that will allow more recently opened public schools to become active hubs for community life after the bell rings.
“Our kids deserve excellent gyms, ovals, playgrounds and open spaces – now, more Victorians will be able to enjoy them too,” Carroll said.
Kicking off immediately, the pilot aims to connect local sports clubs, language schools, music groups and other after-hours programs with much-needed space in Melbourne’s west – a region experiencing rapid population growth and a soaring need for accessible infrastructure.
A dedicated support team will help schools manage logistics, promote opportunities, coordinate outreach, and take care of agreements and cleaning, making the process seamless for schools and community groups alike.
Out of 1,580 government schools across Victoria, two-thirds already share their grounds informally. This new program formalises and expands that access, especially in the west, where 40 new government schools have opened since 2017.
“This exciting pilot program opens school doors for use beyond the classroom,” said Member for Point Cook Mathew Hilakari. “It transforms these spaces where local sports clubs, music groups, and neighbourhood activities can flourish alongside our kids’ learning.”
