After two years behind construction barriers, one of Melbourne’s most distinctive underground spaces is back. From Monday 28 July, the iconic Campbell Arcade will re-open to the public, connecting Flinders Street Station to the new Town Hall Station via a revived pedestrian passage.
Originally opened in 1955 as the city’s first major post-war infrastructure project, Campbell Arcade has been carefully restored as part of the transformative Metro Tunnel Project.
“Campbell Arcade will open to passengers tomorrow and it will soon form part of the connection between Flinders Street Station and the new Town Hall Station, opening later this year,” Premier Jacinta Allan said.

The arcade’s distinctive 1950s design has been meticulously preserved, with pink-tiled walls, granite columns, and original shopfronts receiving sensitive upgrades including lighting and ceiling replacement.
Passengers will access the arcade from Flinders Street, Degraves Street, or via the new underground pedestrian tunnel linking to Town Hall Station – part of the Metro Tunnel’s sweeping rail overhaul.
The arcade’s eight shopfronts will reopen later in 2025, with tenancy applications now underway.
