Major works to remove three of Bayside’s most dangerous level crossings are kicking off tonight, with crews set to work around the clock on a 10-day blitz that will also deliver a brand-new premium Mordialloc Station.
The state government confirmed the works will see rail bridges built to replace crossings at McDonald Street, Mordialloc and Station Street, Aspendale – a move set to cut congestion and improve safety on one of Melbourne’s busiest suburban corridors.
Construction teams will drill more than 100 holes up to 31 metres deep and demolish sections of the current Mordialloc Station to make way for the new elevated structure. Boom gates and signalling infrastructure at Bear Street will also be dismantled, with the road permanently closed to traffic to preserve access to the nearby stabling facility.
Buses will replace trains on parts of the Frankston Line from 8:30pm Monday 18 August, with services resuming Friday 29 August. From then until mid-2026, trains will run to an altered timetable and all services will depart from Platform 1 at Mordialloc Station.
When complete in 2026, the new Mordialloc Station will feature modern facilities, improved lighting and accessibility with entrances at both ends of the platforms, and landscaped public areas planted with 86,000 trees, shrubs and grasses.
The upgrade will slash delays for the 26,000 vehicles that pass through the three crossings daily, where boom gates are down more than 40 minutes during the morning peak. Since 2016, the sites have recorded 12 near misses and one fatality.
“Works are ramping up in Mordialloc with major construction now underway on the new rail bridges that will see three dangerous level crossings gone for good next year,” said Minister for Transport Infrastructure Gabrielle Williams.
“The Frankston Line will be level crossing free by 2029, transforming the way locals live, work, and travel,” she said.
