Kensington’s beloved Doutta Galla Hotel, affectionately known as The Doot, is set to reopen its red doors just in time for Cup Week, following a major renovation that began in November 2024. The revamped venue promises a new era of hospitality that celebrates its 135-year history while ushering in a modern pub experience.
The Doot’s relaunch comes with new owners and big ambitions. Kickon Group, the team behind The Terminus Hotel, The Continental, and Pincho Disco, has taken the reins, led by Craig Shearer and new Pub Partner Ben Lougoon.
They’re joined by a group of high-profile investors, including Aussie actor Travis Fimmel and former AFL stars Luke Hodge and Andrew Walker.
Guests can expect a complete transformation, with new bars on every level – including two upstairs floors that were once hotel rooms.
On the ground floor, The Doot will feature a split layout, with a relaxed bar on one side and a restaurant on the other. The menu promises elevated pub classics and an extensive steak offering, all served with bold flavours and generous portions.
In the months ahead, the upper floors will open as flexible event spaces, designed as modern beer halls ideal for parties, corporate gatherings, and community celebrations. A central void between the levels will flood the rooms with natural light, connecting the upstairs energy with the bustle below.
True to tradition, the pub’s iconic red doors will remain – a nod to its legacy as a community cornerstone since 1889. With late-night music, a 3am licence, and plenty of character, The Doot is ready to reclaim its place as both a Kensington local and a Melbourne destination.
The Doutta Galla Hotel is at 339 Racecourse Rd, Kensington. Website: douttagallahotel.com
