Kensington’s beloved Doutta Galla Hotel – affectionately known as The Doot – has officially reopened its famous red doors, unveiling a complete transformation that marries its historic charm with modern hospitality.
Standing proudly just metres from Flemington Racecourse, The Doot has long been a hub for locals and racegoers alike. Now, thanks to a top-to-bottom renovation and new ownership under Kickon Group, the pub’s next chapter promises big flavour, big energy, and even bigger community spirit.
Kickon Group CEO Craig Shearer has joined forces with Pub Partner Ben Lougoon and investors including actor Travis Fimmel and former AFL stars Luke Hodge and Andrew Walker to reimagine the 1889 landmark. The result is a three-level venue that feels both familiar and fresh.
The ground floor features dual street entrances opening into a vibrant public bar and a relaxed dining room, with warm timber, arched windows, and long new bars setting the tone. Upstairs, two levels of light-filled function spaces feature exposed brick, stained glass, and greenery – blending New York loft style with Melbourne pub nostalgia.
Led by 2023 AHA VIC Chef of the Year, Jake Furst, the new menu celebrates seasonal produce and bold, generous cooking.
The grill is the star, with more than a dozen premium steaks cooked on the Josper Grill, while elevated pub classics and inventive dishes round out the offering. Behind the bar, 16 taps pour local favourites including Hop Nation’s Doutta Lager, Stone & Wood, and Guinness, alongside cocktails and on-tap wines.
Live music, trivia, and sport will keep The Doot buzzing all week, while weekly specials and happy hour deals offer something for every local.
