The flamboyant and fearless cabaret hit SUGAR will return to Melbourne this summer as part of Midsumma Festival, running from 13 to 25 January 2026 at Arts Centre Melbourne’s The Show Room.
Written by Ro Bright and directed by Kitan Petkovski, the one-person show stars Melbourne-born multidisciplinary artist Tomáš Kantor as Sugar, a gender-fluid twink who discovers there’s serious money to be made from “transactional relationships” after being inspired by Julia Roberts’ Pretty Woman.
Equal parts outrageous, theatrical and heartfelt, SUGAR is a slick, high-voltage ride through pop, pleasure and self-discovery. Kantor delivers a powerhouse performance packed with live renditions of hits by Lady Gaga, Chappell Roan, Lorde, Sugababes and Kylie Minogue, weaving together music, comedy and emotional truth with razor-sharp precision.
Since making their professional debut in the cult musical FANGIRLS, Kantor has become one of Australia’s most versatile young performers, appearing with Opera Australia, Bell Shakespeare and Melbourne Theatre Company. Returning home after taking SUGAR global, Kantor is ready to bring the show’s wild energy back to the city where it all began.
“I’m ecstatic to be returning to Melbourne with this salacious sizzling sexy snack of a show,” Kantor said. “We absolutely WERKED Edinburgh Fringe out, and I’m prepped, plucked and preened for my no holds barred homecoming special. Are you hungry for an hourlong slick camp pop musical joyride with an undercover overconfident sugar baby at the wheel? Honey, I’m delivering the goods to satisfy your sugar cravings. So get ready to EAT Melbourne – I guarantee no leftover crumbs xo.”
Premiering at the 2024 Melbourne Fringe Festival to rave reviews and multiple award nominations, SUGAR has toured nationally and internationally, including seasons in Adelaide, Sydney, Brisbane and at the Edinburgh Fringe.
Tickets are on sale now via Arts Centre Melbourne.
