A psychedelic wave of music history is set to wash over Lilydale as Enjoy This Trip: The Art of Music Posters arrives at Yarra Ranges Regional Museum.
The exhibition, drawn from the National Gallery of Australia’s remarkable collection of Australian and international posters, brings the bold colour, electric energy and boundary-pushing creativity of the 1960s to 1980s into sharp focus. Showcasing some of the era’s most iconic graphic design, it offers visitors a vivid window into the experimental spirit that shaped modern music culture.
At the heart of the exhibition is a trove of more than 500 posters acquired in 1978 from American collector Ben Friedman. These works chart a cultural revolution, capturing the psychedelic pulse and freewheeling expression of the late 60s.
Among the highlights are pieces by the San Francisco Big Five – Alton Kelley, Victor Moscoso, Rick Griffin, Wes Wilson and Stanley Mouse Miller – whose kaleidoscopic visuals and hand-drawn lettering became synonymous with bands like The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, The Mothers of Invention and The Grateful Dead.
Australian posters add a grounded, distinctly local counterpoint. Created by 1970s and 80s collectives such as the Earthworks Poster Collective and Sydney University Art Workshop, they reflect the grit and humour of the pub rock era while engaging with social justice and political activism. Paul Worstead’s works stand out for their affectionate nods to Australian suburbia and his long creative partnership with Mental as Anything.
Presented as a National Gallery Touring Exhibition and supported by the Australian Government through the National Collecting Institutions Touring and Outreach Program, Enjoy This Trip opens Saturday 13 December 2025 and runs until Sunday 22 February 2026. Entry is free, offering visitors a chance to experience the colour, chaos and creativity of an unforgettable musical era.
