A major theatrical event is set to land in Athenaeum Theatre this November, with internationally recognised performer Jason Donovan returning to his hometown to take on one of theatre’s most iconic roles.
Donovan will star as Randle P. McMurphy in a bold new production of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, running exclusively from 13 November for a strictly limited season.
Joining him is award-winning Australian actress Nadine Garner as Nurse Ratched, alongside international performer Jeremy Proulx as Chief Bromden, completing a cast built around some of the strongest dramatic talent on stage today.
Adapted from Ken Kesey’s landmark novel, the stage version by Dale Wasserman remains one of the most performed and confronting works in modern theatre. Set inside a tightly controlled psychiatric institution, the story follows the arrival of McMurphy, a rebellious force who disrupts the rigid system enforced by Nurse Ratched and begins to awaken something in the patients around him.
Directed by acclaimed Australian director Roger Hodgman, the production leans into the tension between control and individuality, delivering a version that is both unsettling and deeply human.
For Donovan, the role marks a significant shift in an already wide-ranging career that spans music, television and major stage productions. His recent performances in The Rocky Horror Show and international concert tours have reaffirmed his enduring connection with audiences across Australia and the UK.
Returning to Melbourne adds further meaning for Donovan, whose early career began in the city’s entertainment scene before he rose to global fame.
“I recently saw the production at The Old Vic in London and was completely blown away by it,” he said.
“It’s powerful, confronting, funny and deeply human theatre. The story may have been written many years ago, but its themes still feel incredibly relevant today — challenging authority, questioning the status quo and pushing back against the system.”
“McMurphy is an absolute powerhouse of a character, he provokes, disrupts and inspires those around him to resist, and it’s unlike anything I’ve played before, which is exactly why I wanted to take it on. To bring this iconic story to Melbourne audiences is something I’m genuinely excited about,” he said.
Nadine Garner also brings extensive stage and screen experience to the production, with a career spanning acclaimed television roles and award-winning theatre performances.
“I’m thrilled to be part of this production and especially excited to work alongside Jason,” she said. “This is such an iconic piece of theatre — bold, emotional and incredibly relevant — and I think audiences will be completely drawn into this world from the moment the curtain rises.”
Jeremy Proulx brings international experience to the role of Chief Bromden, having performed the character in acclaimed productions across North America and the UK.
“I am thrilled to be making my Australian debut with such a talented ensemble of actors, technicians and artists who will no doubt bring their amazing creative voices and gifts for storytelling to the process in bringing to life such a classic story onstage,” he said.
