One of Australia’s most acclaimed actors, Kat Stewart, is returning to the Melbourne stage this August for the world premiere of Break of Day, a powerful new Australian drama from playwright Steve Rodgers.
Presented at Malthouse Theatre’s Merlyn Theatre, the production reunites Stewart with celebrated director Sarah Goodes following their award-winning collaboration on Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf. Together, they’re bringing to life a story that blends humour, heartbreak and the realities of modern regional Australia.
Set in the fictional rural town of Burra Creek, Break of Day follows Pam, played by Stewart, a nightshift worker at the world’s largest online retail warehouse who spends her nights catching buses while dreaming of something better for her daughter Rae. Played by Heartbreak High star Sherry-Lee Watson, Rae is a high-achieving student trying to carve out a future in a town left behind by opportunity and infrastructure.
As the story unfolds across a single night, the play explores the fierce bond between mother and daughter, alongside themes of class, sacrifice and survival in regional Australia.
Director Sarah Goodes said, “I am thrilled to be teaming up with the extraordinary Kat Stewart again to introduce audiences to this remarkable new play by Steve Rodgers.”
“New Australian work is always exciting, especially a piece like this one that has been lovingly developed over time and is both funny and moving.”
Kat Stewart said the story immediately resonated with her.
“What drew me to Steve Rodger’s beautiful script is how deeply relatable it is. It’s a story about the fierce sacrificial love of a mother, set against the harsh realities of modern regional Australia. It is funny, gritty and generous. But most importantly, it feels true.”
The production also stars Chum Ehelepola, Richard Piper and newcomer Theo Clarke, with design from Anna Cordingley, lighting by Paul Jackson and sound by Jethro Woodward.
Break of Day runs at Malthouse Theatre’s Merlyn Theatre from 7 to 29 August 2026.
