The groundbreaking Burlesque stage show Shimmery Burlesque returns to Melbourne, playing at the Atheneum Theatre from 23-26 May.
Shimmery Burlesque is a unique performance that narrates the journey of Lady Shimmery, a dressmaker deeply involved in Burlesque costume design. The performance integrates captivating Burlesque acts within Lady Shimmery’s story. Starting in her workroom, the show features a cast of twenty adorned in rhinestones, feathers, and tassels.
The narrative then shifts to Paris, where Lady Shimmery’s love for tease artistry blossoms amidst a backdrop of gardens and French Cabaret.
Written and directed by Holly Mouat, the show debuted in 2022, inspired by her mother, Kerrie Schultz, the head costume designer. Abbey Paige Williams portrays Lady Shimmery, supported by a talented Burlesque ensemble. The choreography is by Maple Rose and Kimera Diamond, with lighting by Jason Bovaird.
The story draws from Kerrie’s real-life journey, transitioning from graphic design to fashion and bridal couture, with a pivotal trip to Paris fueling her fascination with French Cabaret. Holly, aided by Kerrie’s costume craftsmanship, delved into Burlesque, leading to the creation of Shimmery Couture.
