Following its triumphant Sydney season, the electrifying MJ The Musical will take over Melbourne’s Her Majesty’s Theatre from September 2025, producers announced today.
The Olivier and four-time Tony Award-winning show, celebrating the life and artistry of Michael Jackson, has captivated global audiences – and now Melbourne will experience its high-energy spectacle.
Since its Broadway debut in 2022, MJ has wowed crowds in London, Germany, and across the US. The Australian production, led by producer Michael Cassel alongside Broadway’s Lia Vollack, John Branca, and John McClain, premiered in Sydney on 8 March to roaring acclaim—including three standing ovations, two of which happened mid-show.
“We’ve been overwhelmed by the incredible response to MJ—the energy, the passion, the standing ovations night after night,” said Vollack.
“The entire creative team and I are thrilled that MJ will call Melbourne home from September, and for more audiences to experience the talented company who bring this show to life.”
Cassel added: “MJ is an electrifying theatrical experience that has been embraced by Australian audiences. We can’t wait to bring that magic to Melbourne and fill Her Majesty’s Theatre with the music, movement, and spirit of Michael Jackson.
“This production is a true celebration of one of the greatest entertainers of all time, brought to life by a world-class, award-winning cast and creative team,” he said.
Set in 1992, the musical offers an intimate look at the making of Jackson’s Dangerous World Tour, framed through the eyes of an MTV journalist granted rare rehearsal access. With a script by Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage, it delves into Jackson’s creative genius while showcasing over 25 of his biggest hits, including Thriller, Smooth Criminal, and Man in the Mirror.
The production boasts a stellar creative team, including choreography by Christopher Wheeldon OBE (who won a Tony and Olivier for his work) and costumes by Academy Award winner Paul Tazewell (Hamilton). Having already dazzled over 1.8 million theatregoers worldwide, MJ promises to leave Melbourne audiences on their feet—just as it has everywhere else.
