Following sold-out runs at the Sydney Opera House, Reuben Kaye’s wildly outrageous, queer-inspired spectacle Opera Up Late is making its keenly anticipated Melbourne debut for one fabulous night only on Sunday, 2 November at the Regent Theatre.
Conceived by Melbourne-born international comedy and cabaret icon Reuben Kaye and award-winning director Shaun Rennie, Opera Up Late was originally created for World Pride 2023 as a late-night special. Its risqué blend of opera, comedy, and cabaret shatters genre expectations, leaving audiences roaring with laughter. After hosting the saucy soirée earlier this year at the Joan Sutherland Theatre, Kaye is thrilled to bring the show to his hometown.
“Opera Up Late is without a doubt one of my favourite nights of the year, and I am stoked that we now have the opportunity to bring it to Melbourne, one of the world’s great comedy destinations, for more people to enjoy,” Kaye said. “For one night only, we get to turn the opera genre on its head to give the audience a show they’ve never seen or expected. We’re going to have a lot of fun.”
Joining Kaye on stage is a star-studded lineup of Opera Australia performers, including multi-award-winning soprano Emma Matthews. Together, they’ll deliver a bold, hilarious ride through opera—complete with high octaves, outrageous costumes, and wigs—that’s perfect for both opera newbies and aficionados.
Kicking off at 9:00 PM, the show reimagines opera hits, musical theatre classics, and pop numbers in a 75-minute, no-interval whirlwind of queer romance, high drama, and unapologetic fun. Don’t miss this one-night-only extravaganza at the Regent Theatre.
