Cricket fans in Geelong will be treated to a Big Bash bonanza this December as the Melbourne Renegades open their KFC BBL|15 season with back-to-back home games at GMHBA Stadium for the first time.
The Renegades will light up Kardinia Park with prime-time matches on Monday, 15 December and Sunday, 21 December, both starting at 7:15 PM AEDT. The fixtures – strategically placed in the final week of the Victorian school term and the start of summer holidays – promise high-energy entertainment to launch the cricket season.
This marks the eighth consecutive year the Renegades have brought Big Bash action to Geelong, before returning to Marvel Stadium for three January home games.
“Geelong has always been a special part of our summer schedule,” said Renegades General Manager James Rosengarten. “The support from our fans in the region has grown every season, and we’re excited to deliver two huge nights of entertainment and cricket for them this year.”
Rosengarten emphasised the club’s balanced partnership with both venues, noting: “Marvel Stadium is an amazing place to play Big Bash cricket and an important home to the Renegades. Their support has given us the flexibility to stage two home games in Geelong before returning for an exciting run of matches under the roof in January.”
GMHBA Stadium CEO Gerard Griffin welcomed the return of the Big Bash, saying: “The atmosphere these games bring is fantastic – they’re a real highlight on the Geelong event calendar.”
The Geelong matches have produced iconic Renegades moments over the years, from Dwayne Bravo’s celebratory dances to Will Sutherland’s monster six onto the Reg Hickey Stand roof.
City of Greater Geelong Mayor Cr Dr Stretch Kontejil OAM added: “We are thrilled to host the Renegades’ first two home games of the upcoming Big Bash League here in Geelong.”
Marvel Stadium’s Scott Fitzgerald promised “three blockbuster matches” to complete the Renegades’ home season.
With Renegades Memberships going on sale 1 July and the full BBL|15 fixture releasing 3 July, fans can soon lock in their summer cricket plans.
