Richmond Football Club’s historic home ground is about to enter a new era, with the state government announcing a $20 million redevelopment of Punt Road Oval that will secure the Tigers’ future in their heartland while delivering elite facilities for women’s football.
The state-of-the-art upgrade, set for completion by 2027, will feature a new two-level Jack Dyer Stand with increased capacity, replacing the current structure. The project will also deliver AFL/AFLW standard changerooms, player recovery facilities, an underground car park and a landscaped terrace.
Perhaps most significantly, the oval itself will be expanded and realigned to match MCG dimensions, with new lighting installed to create a premium venue capable of hosting more AFLW matches. The improvements come as Richmond’s women’s team looks to build on their seventh-place finish last season.
“This development will ensure footy, fans and the community will continue to benefit from this facility for many years to come,” said Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Steve Dimopoulos, noting the oval’s 140-year connection to the Tigers.
The redevelopment extends beyond elite football, with community organisations including the Korin Gamadji Institute and Bachar Houli Foundation set to benefit from the upgraded facilities.
Richmond CEO Shane Dunne welcomed the transformation: “We are incredibly grateful the State Government shares our vision for this iconic site and our commitment to re-establish Punt Road Oval as a community asset and state-of-the-art facility for men’s and women’s sport.”
The upgrade promises to honour the ground’s rich history while future-proofing it for generations of Tigers to come.
