After an award-winning 2023 season, Soundworks Productions’ Songs For A New World returns to Chapel off Chapel this August – and it’s bigger, bolder and more breathtaking than ever.
Jason Robert Brown’s beloved song cycle, originally written for four voices, has been reimagined for a 14-strong ensemble, delivering a sweeping, emotional ride powered by lush harmonies and bold visual storytelling.
Rather than following a single linear plot, the show presents a series of standalone vignettes—each song introducing a new character or situation, connected by the overarching theme of pivotal moments in life when everything changes.
Last year’s production cleaned up at the Green Room Awards—nabbing Best Direction, Musical Direction, Choreography, Lighting, Set and Costumes, and Ensemble—and this limited return season is set to pick up where it left off.
The live band (led by conductor Mark Bradley) remains centre stage, and Sidney Younger’s award-winning lighting once again promises to bathe every note in cinematic colour.
Producer and co-musical director Benjamin Samuel says the show’s themes hit home harder than ever.
“In a world that’s being ravaged by conflict and despair, the songs in the show invite the audience to consider the hope amidst the storms,” he explains. “The work offers a reflection on the human condition, our pursuit of salvation, and the hope that drives us toward tomorrow.”
With its stellar cast, powerhouse vocals, and immersive staging, Songs For A New World is more than a show – it’s a reminder of why we keep showing up for live theatre.
Songs For A New World will be at Chapel off Chapel (The Chapel) – 12 Little Chapel Street, Prahran from 3-10 August. Book tickets here.
