Lin Manuel Miranda’s breakout musical In the Heights is lighting up the Comedy Theatre with a burst of rhythm, colour and utter joy while also offering a sizzling hot antidote to Melbourne’s winter.
Set in New York’s underprivileged Washington Heights, the story follows Usnavi, a charismatic bodega owner torn between chasing his dreams and staying loyal to his tight-knit community. Romance, gentrification, rent stress, and a stifling heatwave ripple through the storyline, but at its core, In the Heights is a love letter to place, culture and those little dreams that define us all.
Ryan González wears the heart of Usnavi like second skin: wry, hopeful and endlessly warm. Olivia Vásquez as Vanessa brings fierce vocals and killer stage presence, especially during that turn-up dance number at The Club.
Ngali Shaw’s Benny shows charm and confidence, and his chemistry with Nina (Mariah Gonzalez) hits just the right note – nostalgic, tender and realreal. Comedic highlights include Steve Costi as Sonny, Vanessa Menjivar as swirling-voiced gossip Daniela, and Richard Valdez as the unforgettable Piragua Guy.
Miranda’s musical genius is his fusion of hip-hop, Latin rhythms and razor-sharp wordplay—forms the show’s beating heart. In the Heights was his first big leap, and it paved the way for Hamilton. If you’re familiar with the latter, you’ll definitely pick its roots in In the Heights.
In the Heights is pure communal joy – passionate, pulse-raising, and impossible to resist. Catch it at the Comedy Theatre while you still can – it closes on 6 September.
