The Docklands to Portarlington ferry service will continue for another two years, ensuring the popular service continues as a vital transport link for locals, commuters and visitors to the Bellarine Peninsula.
Since launching in 2017, the ferry has carried around 120,000 passengers annually. In the January 2025 summer peak alone, more than 15,000 passengers boarded the service. Even during the colder months, the ferry continues to attract thousands, providing an alternative to road travel and easing congestion.
Portarlington’s appeal as a destination has grown alongside the ferry’s success. According to Tourism Research Australia, the town welcomed 677,000 visitors in the year ending December 2024 – a 36 per cent increase from the previous year.
The town was also recognised with a Bronze award in the 2025 Victorian Top Tourism Town Awards, while ferry operator Port Phillip Ferries was named Best Major Tour and Transport Operator in Victoria at the 2024 Victorian Tourism Awards.
The state government has backed the service with significant investment. In 2022, a $10 million upgrade to Portarlington Pier delivered all-weather access, strengthened infrastructure for aquaculture and emergency response, and a more accessible low landing for water users.
More than $23 million has been invested in supporting infrastructure including the Portarlington Safe Harbour, pier, walkway and reef.
