A striking new outdoor performance space is set to open in November 2025 at Footscray Community Arts, marking a major milestone for Melbourne’s west. Designed by MGS Architects with landscape design by Simone Bliss Landscape Architects, “Lango” is a $8.7 million project that will host live music, community events, performances, markets and cultural ceremonies.

In Woi-Wurrung, “Lango” means “on the edge” – a fitting name for the site’s position along the Maribyrnong River and a nod to the creative energy that defines the west. The word was gifted by Wurundjeri Elder Aunty Annette Xiberras from her grandmother’s preserved language diary, reflecting an ongoing commitment to cultural revitalisation and connection to Country.
Julia White, Chair of Footscray Community Arts, said, “Last year, we celebrated the 50-year anniversary of Footscray Community Arts. This year, we’re proud to continue this contribution with a revitalised outdoor performance space—ensuring we remain the home of live music, storytelling, and cultural practice in the west for the next 50 years.”

The Lango Stage replaces the centre’s ageing bluestone amphitheatre with new sculptural structure of three overlapping shells. Each is adorned with artwork by Yorta Yorta artist Moorina Bonini, whose designs draw from South Eastern Kulin Nations’ mark-making to represent Ancestors watching over performers.
A reindigenised landscape will wrap the precinct with native plantings and a custom-designed fire bowl by Bonini and Waterside Metal Art, creating space for storytelling and smoking ceremonies.

CEO and Artistic Director Daniel Santageli said, “The Lango Stage is a powerful expression of our commitment to a First Nations-first approach… embedding cultural knowledge and connection to Country into the heart of this space.”
To celebrate the opening, two free community music events will be held, including a concert on 31 January 2026 featuring neo-soul artist Kaiit and DJ PGZ.
