The cult rock musical Heathers, based on the 1988 film starting Winona Ryder and Christian Slater is confirmed for a run in Melbourne from 8 April to 3 May 2026 at The Playhouse at The Arts Centre.
The production will revisit the infamous halls of Westerberg High, bringing its dark comedy, razor-sharp wit and anthemic songs back to the stage in what promises to be a bold, electrifying revival of this beloved show.
Since its Australian debut in 2016 Heathers: The Musical has built a dedicated following thanks to its unflinching look at high school power dynamics, popularity and rebellion.
The story centres on Veronica Sawyer, a sharp-witted teenager who infiltrates the ruthless clique known as the Heathers – only to find herself caught up in a spiralling journey of power, romance and mayhem.
Written by Laurence O’Keefe and Kevin Murphy, the musical retains the film’s irreverent edge while pushing its rock-infused score and biting dialogue into new theatrical territory. Its themes of identity, belonging and resistance continue to resonate in today’s climate, giving the show renewed relevance nearly a decade after its first Melbourne season.
“We are beyond excited to announce that Heathers the Musical is coming to Australia and New Zealand next year,” says director Andy Fickman.
“We can’t wait to share this twistedly heartfelt story with audiences down under. It’s a show that deals with love, heartache, sadness, defying expectations and being true to yourself,” he said.
The Australian cast is yet to be announced. Following the show’s Melbourne run, it will travel to Adelaide, Gold Coast, Canberra, Sydney and Perth.
Tickets for the Melbourne shows go on sale on 23 October.
Details around tickets, cast and exact venue will be announced in the coming months. Stay tuned for a chance to dive into the darkly delicious world of Heathers: The Musical this April in Melbourne.
