Melbourne families can dive into a mesmerising underwater world this summer when The Whale, a breathtaking interactive puppet installation, surfaces on the Arts Centre Melbourne Forecourt from 17 to 24 January 2026.
Created by Western Australia’s renowned Spare Parts Puppet Theatre and designed by Leon Hendroff, The Whale is a free 10-metre-long immersive experience inviting audiences to step inside a dreamlike ocean journey.
Participants can join puppeteers to animate the enormous creature as it glides through the forecourt, surrounded by luminous sea life and an evocative soundscape that evokes the deep blue.

Arts Centre Melbourne Creative Producer, Families & Children Mary Harvey said she’s thrilled to welcome Spare Parts Puppet Theatre back to Melbourne, following their 2019 hit String Symphony.
“Arts Centre Melbourne is shaping up to be the essential destination for families this summer,” she said.
“The impressive craftsmanship and limitless imagination presented in their latest immersive installation The Whale is sure to create magical memories for all ages.”
“The Whale is the definitive ‘cherry on top’ for our families summer program. From incredible performances, jaw-dropping talents and marvellous adventures, visitors of all ages to Arts Centre Melbourne will be able to engage and connect with the performing arts in new and exciting ways,” she said.
Spare Parts Puppet Theatre Artistic Director Philip Mitchell described the work as a celebration of the ocean’s largest creatures. “In many cultures, whales are a symbol of mystery and magnificence, stirring a profound connection within us,” he said. “The Whale allows families to imagine the whale’s world up close, inspiring wonder and respect for the natural world.”
The installation anchors a packed summer program at Arts Centre Melbourne, with Ten Thousand Hours, ZOOOM, Shrek The Musical and Bluey’s Big Play rounding out the family-friendly lineup.
