Melbourne’s beloved little penguins are ready for their close-up once again, with a new free penguin viewing experience opening at St Kilda Pier from 29 October. The purpose-built, 150-metre viewing platform will bring visitors closer than ever to one of the city’s most charming wildlife encounters.
Minister for Environment Steve Dimopoulos announced that bookings are now open for the free experience, which will be operated by Phillip Island Nature Parks. Known globally for its penguin conservation expertise, the organisation will lead guided sessions to help visitors learn about the colony while protecting the welfare of the birds.
“The free penguin experience at St Kilda will bring families up close to these iconic animals and draw in thousands of visitors to our city each year,” said Minister Dimopoulos.
The new elevated platform offers accessible entry, seating, and panoramic views over the breakwater where the penguins nest each evening. Volunteer group Earthcare St Kilda, which has worked to protect the colony for more than 30 years, will continue to play an active role in safeguarding the penguins and supporting the nightly operations.
The colony has been given several months to settle into its rejuvenated habitat before the public returns, ensuring the penguins are comfortable with the renewed visitor activity.
To manage demand and protect the birds, bookings are essential and expected to fill quickly, particularly over spring and summer.
The wider $53 million St Kilda Pier upgrade also includes a sweeping curved walkway, tiered seating, new community spaces, and upgraded facilities near the historic kiosk — transforming one of Melbourne’s most iconic seaside spots into a world-class coastal destination.
Bookings can be made online at penguins.org.au.
