One of Melbourne’s busiest CBD pubs is about to get a serious upgrade, with Garden State Hotel announcing plans for a sprawling new Rooftop Garden set high above Flinders Lane. The 300-seat space will transform the top of the venue into an open-air escape with sweeping views across the city skyline.
Designed to feel like a natural continuation of Garden State’s upbeat, social vibe, the two-level rooftop is built for relaxed city drinking rather than flashy spectacle. Think greenery, soft lighting and plenty of room to settle in, whether it’s a quick after-work drink, a long afternoon with friends or an easy weekend session.

Cocktails will lean into herb and floral flavours, supported by a solid line-up of craft beers, approachable wines and non-alcoholic options. A full pub menu will follow, keeping things familiar for regulars while giving rooftop visitors plenty to work through over a few hours.
The design comes from Melbourne-based architect Telha Clarke, with layered plantings, banquette seating and an upper mezzanine level that can be booked for private events and seasonal activations. A retractable roof means the space is being built for year-round use, not just blue-sky days.

“The rooftop will be a true extension of what people already love about Garden State,” says Garden State Venue Manager Scott Woods. “With a retractable roof, it will be the perfect place to gather all year round.”
Construction is set to begin in February, with the Rooftop Garden scheduled to open in Spring 2026. Once complete, it will add another major rooftop to Melbourne’s ever-growing list, this time perched right in the heart of the CBD.
Melburnians keen to be first through the doors can sign up for here updates as Garden State’s newest space starts to take shape above Flinders Lane.
