One of the most influential plays of the 21st century is coming back to where it all began. Prima Facie will return to Australian stages for a limited homecoming season in Sydney and Melbourne, with the original Griffin Theatre Company production back on mainstages.
The Melbourne run will commence at The Comedy Theatre from 20 May 2026.
Written by Lawrence Olivier Award-winning playwright Suzie Miller and directed by Lee Lewis, the production sees Sheridan Harbridge reprise the role of Tessa, the performance that launched a global phenomenon.
The play premiered at Griffin Theatre Company in 2019 after emerging from the Griffin Award for new Australian writing. From its 105-seat Kings Cross theatre, Prima Facie quickly toured nationally before expanding across the world, translated into more than 30 languages and staged throughout Europe, the UK, the US, Asia and South America.
The story follows Tessa, a brilliant criminal lawyer who thrives within the rules of the courtroom until she finds herself confronting the system from the other side.
“I couldn’t be more thrilled to bring the original production of Prima Facie back to the stage with Lee Lewis and Sheridan Harbridge,” said Suzie Miller.
Sheridan Harbridge said, “Prima Facie shot out of a tiny theatre in Kings Cross like a lightning bolt, igniting conversation about the justice system that spread around the globe.”
Presented by Griffin Theatre Company and Andrew Henry Presents, the returning season honours the original voice, performance and staging that carried this Australian work onto the world stage.
