The Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix is staying put. The Victorian Government says it has ruled out a request from Dorna Sports to move the event from Phillip Island to Albert Park, locking in the iconic coastal circuit as the home of the race beyond 2026.
The decision keeps one of regional Australia’s biggest international sporting events at Phillip Island, where it has been held 29 times.
Each year, the MotoGP round draws tens of thousands of visitors, filling local accommodation, cafes and pubs and delivering a major boost to the region’s economy.
While discussions were underway about a possible shift to Albert Park in Melbourne, the government confirmed it will only provide additional funding to support an expanded event if it remains at Phillip Island. The move signals a clear preference to back the long standing home of the race rather than relocate it to the city.
Phillip Island’s fast, flowing circuit is widely regarded as one of the most scenic stops on the MotoGP calendar, with its coastal backdrop and high speed corners making it a favourite among riders and fans alike.
“Phillip Island is the home of the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix, and we are proud to support it,” said Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Steve Dimopoulos.
This year’s Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix is set to return to Phillip Island in October, continuing a decades long association between the world championship and the Victorian coastline.
