A self-proclaimed guru promising to deliver the sun in a can is heading to the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, with Jonny Pasvolsky bringing his one-man show The CAN Principle to town from 28 March 2026.
The show centres on Mervin Gimplik, a questionable life coach with a big idea and even bigger confidence. Fresh from a run at Adelaide Fringe, the character arrives in Melbourne claiming he can bottle sunshine itself and sell it back to you, one can at a time.
Behind the pitch is a sharp dig at the modern self-help industry. The show takes aim at life coaches, miracle fixes and expensive programs built on big promises, using Merv’s outlandish idea as the anchor. The concept traces back to a childhood memory of opening a souvenir can labelled “Genuine Australian Sunshine” and finding nothing inside.
Pasvolsky, known to Australian audiences for McLeod’s Daughters and internationally for roles in Westworld and the film Mortdecai, leans into that absurdity while keeping the story grounded in personal experience. The show draws on his move from South Africa to Australia, touching on culture clashes, sunburn and the awkward process of finding your place.
It plays out as both parody and character study, built around Merv’s relentless optimism and ability to sell almost anything.
The Melbourne run takes place at the MC Showroom from March 28 to April 5, with tickets starting at $35, or $28 concession. More information and bookings are available via thecanprinciple.com.au.
