Ever wondered what Troy and Gabriella were actually auditioning for in High School Musical? Twinkle Town is here to answer that question in the most theatrical way possible.
This new comedy musical being performed as part of this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival imagines the long lost East High Winter Musicale, with Miss Darbus proudly presenting the 20 year anniversary performance of Twinkle Town: The Musical.
Picking up with Minnie, once played by Gabriella Montez, and Arnold, once played by Troy Bolton, the show follows the duo as they bop to the top of the theatrical food chain while rehearsing for an Off Off Off Broadway show. But will their dreams of stardom really see them breaking free from their understudy status?
Featuring fan favourite songs from the hit Disney Channel original movie High School Musical, Twinkle Town dives into the highs and lows of theatre life, complete with dazzling costumes and familiar characters inspired by the iconic film.
Created by Naarm based writers and performers Dean and Isabella, the show marks Dean’s return to the Melbourne International Comedy Festival following his hit season of #SwiftTok in 2024. Isabella brings her own impressive performance credits across film and theatre, making this a sharp and self aware love letter to musical theatre fandom.
Early praise has been strong, with My Melbourne Arts noting “Robinson displays some wonderful wit in his writing” and Theatre Matters adding “I believe he is destined for bigger things”.
Twinkle Town runs from 6 to 19 April at Motley Spielhaus in the CBD, with shows at 7.10pm and a 55 minute running time. If you are a Sharpay, a Ryan or just love a good backstage parody, this might be just what you’re looking for. Tickets available here.
