British Airways will return to Melbourne Airport with daily flights to London Heathrow Airport from January 2027, giving local travellers a new way to reach the UK and Europe. The airline ceased flying to Melbourne in 2026.
The hotly anticipated comeback begins on January 11, operating via Kuala Lumpur on a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. The aircraft will run in a four-class configuration, covering first class through to economy, and will use the same plane for the full journey.
For passengers across Victoria and neighbouring states, the route adds another option into London, along with easier access to onward destinations through British Airways’ wider global network.
Melbourne Airport chief executive Lorie Argus said the move reinforces the city’s position as a key international gateway.
“We are thrilled to welcome British Airways back to Melbourne Airport and we’re incredibly excited about what this extra choice means for travellers and exporters,” she said.
“British Airways is one of the world’s most recognisable airlines and in its more than 100 years of flying has earned a well-deserved reputation for excellence and reliability.
“With the largest choice of airlines flying to the UK and Europe, 24-hour operations and the shortest minimum connection time of any Australian airport, Melbourne Airport is now the clear choice for Europeans heading to Australia or Australians looking to travel abroad,’ she said.
British Airways’ chief planning and strategy officer Neil Chernoff said the airline expects strong demand.
“We’re delighted to announce sizable growth to our flying schedule for Winter 2026, including a new route to Melbourne,” he said.
“We have a long history of connecting Britain and Australia, and we’re excited to be returning to this great city.”
Flights from London begin January 9, with Melbourne departures from January 11.
