A star-studded new production of Noël Coward’s classic comedy Private Lives is coming to Melbourne in 2027, with internationally acclaimed British actor Hugh Bonneville and Australian favourite Lisa McCune leading the cast.
Following record-breaking demand for its Sydney season, the production will arrive at Melbourne’s Princess Theatre from 18 March 2027 for a strictly limited four-week season.
The Sydney production achieved the highest first-day ticket sales for a play in Theatre Royal Sydney’s history, with Trafalgar Entertainment Joint CEO and Creative Director Sir Howard Panter saying the response highlighted the enduring appeal of Coward’s work.
“To achieve the highest first-day ticket sales for a play in the history of Theatre Royal Sydney before the curtain has even gone up is remarkable,” he said.
“It reflects not only the enduring appeal of Noël Coward’s Private Lives, but also the excitement of seeing Hugh Bonneville and Lisa McCune together in this exceptional new production.”
Bonneville, best known for his roles in Downton Abbey and Paddington, will make his Australian stage debut as Elyot, while McCune will play Amanda. They will be joined by Leon Ford, Claire van der Boom and Julie Forsyth.
Private Lives follows divorced couple Elyot and Amanda, who discover they are staying next door to each other while honeymooning with their new partners. What follows is a hilarious battle of old flames, sharp words and romantic chaos as their past refuses to stay behind them.
Bonneville said he was excited to bring Coward’s comedy to Australian audiences.
“I’m thrilled to be making my Australian stage debut in Private Lives. Noël Coward’s writing remains as sharp, funny and insightful today as ever, and Elyot is a character I’ve always relished the idea of playing,” he said.
Directed by acclaimed British theatre director Christopher Luscombe, the production will bring Coward’s celebrated wit and style to a new generation. Known for his work with the Royal Shakespeare Company, Shakespeare’s Globe and the West End, Luscombe has also directed the long-running international production of The Rocky Horror Show.
Featuring Coward’s beloved song Someday I’ll Find You, Private Lives promises plenty of laughs, memorable characters and the kind of romantic rivalry that has kept audiences entertained since its debut in 1930.
