Fans of the humble snot block rejoice, the best one in Australia is a comfortable day trip away, up in Shepparton.
Shepparton’s North End Bakehouse was crowned the winner of the Great Vanilla Slice Triumph at Merbein on the weekend.
Baker Matt Ablett took home the prize for the first time ever – he’s been entering the competition since he was an apprentice, and now owns his own bakery.
Five-time winners Sharp’s Bakery of Birchip took out second place this year. An Adelaide bakery came third.
This isn’t the first time the North End Bakehouse has won a prize for its vanilla slice. Earlier this year it beat 143 other bakeries to take out first place at the Baking Association of Australia’s Baking Show in Bendigo.
