The 10-week-old African Lion cubs at s at Werribee Open Range Zoo now officially have names!
Zoos Victoria members and donors recently voted on potential names in an online poll. With more than 13,000 people votes cast for monikers for the cubs.
Their names are:
- Mwezi (pronounced ‘Mw-e-zee’) which means ‘moon’ in Swahili, – it was given to one of the male cubs because the litter was born on a full moon.
- Kianga (pronounced ‘Kee-ang-uh’) which means ‘sunshine’ in Swahili – given to the female cub because she’s very bright and picks things up quickly!
- Jango (pronounced ‘Jan-go’) which means ‘brave’ in Xhosa – given to the second male cub because he’s extremely confident exploring on his own.
All three cubs are healthy and are continuing to grow in both size and confidence as they explore their new habitat for up to an hour a day. Keep an eye out on the zoo’s website and socials for updates on when the cubs will be visible to visitors for longer periods of time.
