Fresh from receiving the Venice Biennale’s 2024 Golden Lion Award for Lifetime Achievement in Theatre, Back to Back Theatre will premiere their next major new work Multiple Bad things from April 11 to 13 at Geelong Arts Centre.
The play will then go on tour to Belgium, before heading back to Australia to run at Melbourne’s Malthouse Theatre from 29 May to 9 June.
Led by a stellar cast including Simon Laherty, Sarah Mainwaring, and Scott Price, Multiple Bad Things marks a significant departure as the first major work by the award-winning company by new directors in 17 years.
Exploring the complexities of workplace dynamics, the upcoming production is set to navigate issues of civility, identity and power struggles against a backdrop of social upheaval.
Struggling to work together, three employees grapple with questions of inclusion, identity and intersectionality. Civility slips, bad behaviour escalates and reality distorts. The witching hour is here. Who will be the scapegoat?
Multiple Bad Things is theatre. It is not real. But in a world where self-righteously indignant voices so often drown out the most disenfranchised and vulnerable, this theatre sometimes feels real.
Considered as one of Australia’s most important cultural exports, Back To Back Theatre is powered by a troupe of actors who are perceived as neuro diverse in their ethos to pursue a model of equality that champions diversity and challenges public perceptions.
In addition to its professional practice Back to Back collaborates intensively with communities around the world, with a focus on artistic excellence and elevated social inclusion for people with disabilities.
Making work locally that leads and tours globally, this is an organisation that platforms each new project as a further investigation into stories of the now, curiosities of the unknown and everything that lies between. The company’s commitment to artistic excellence and social inclusion has garnered international acclaim.
