Uber for teens is available in Victoria from today – allowing teenagers aged 13 to 17 to ride independently while giving parents and guardians oversight and control over trips.
The program aims to provide a practical solution for families managing school runs, after-school activities, and social commitments. Since its initial launch in April 2024, Uber for teens has been used for trips to schools, sports facilities, medical and dental clinics, and fast food outlets. Usage is highest between 2 and 6pm, reflecting the demand for transport after school hours.
Victorian parents can now invite teens to create accounts under their Family profile. This allows teens to request rides with supervision from parents or guardians. A new in-app feature, three-way chat, enables parents, teens, and drivers to communicate during trips, providing additional transparency without relying on phone calls.
Teens can choose from a wider range of ride options than before, including Uber Comfort and UberXL, alongside the standard Uber X. Uber One membership benefits, such as $0 delivery fees on eligible Uber Eats orders and discounts on rides, are now extended to teen accounts linked to a parent’s membership.
The service has also been expanded into New South Wales, the Northern Territory and Western Australia, after successful trials in the Australian Capital Territory, South Australia, Tasmania, and Queensland.
Emma Foley, Managing Director, Uber Australia & New Zealand, said: “We know that modern family life is a constant balancing act, from early morning school runs to after-school activities and everything in between.”
“That’s why we are excited to be expanding Uber for teens to New South Wales, Victoria, the Northern Territory, and Western Australia, giving more families access to a safe and reliable way to help lighten the load. For parents, nothing is more important than knowing their teen is in safe hands. Uber for teens is designed with built-in safety features and real-time updates.”
The service includes safety measures such as screened drivers with Working with Children Checks, GPS tracking, PIN verification, and, in some states, audio recording. RideCheck monitors trips for unusual activity, sending alerts if a ride goes off course or stops unexpectedly.
