Drew Anthony Creative’s award-winning production of Saturday Night Fever arrives at the Athenaeum Theatre in Melbourne from January 8, 2026, following a sold-out season in Perth. The reimagined musical marks the long-awaited return of acclaimed director and choreographer Drew Anthony to Melbourne’s stages after nearly two decades.
Anthony’s new take on the cult classic promises a high-voltage mix of dazzling choreography, powerhouse vocals and pure 1970s nostalgia.
Set in Brooklyn, the story follows Tony Manero, a nineteen-year-old paint store clerk who finds freedom and fame under the disco lights. When Tony partners with gifted dancer Stephanie for a local competition, their friendship and ambition collide against a backdrop of class divides, social change and the search for meaning.
Based on the 1977 film that turned John Travolta into a global icon, Saturday Night Fever helped define a generation with its music, style and attitude. The soundtrack, powered by the Bee Gees’ timeless hits Stayin’ Alive, Night Fever, Tragedy, How Deep Is Your Love and More Than A Woman, remains one of the best-selling albums of all time.
Audiences can expect a stunning modern staging complete with high-definition digital backdrops, vivid lighting and spectacular costumes that capture the gritty energy of 1970s New York. The Perth production swept the 2024 BroadwayWorld Awards, winning Best Direction, Best Scenic Design and Best Performer.
“I am thrilled to be returning to Melbourne stages next year with this fabulous show,” Anthony said. “Saturday Night Fever is a brilliant production that cleverly uses music and dancing to explore its characters’ search for identity and a place in the world.”
Saturday Night Fever plays at the Athenaeum Theatre from January 8–25, 2026. Tickets go on sale 10am, Tuesday 28 October via ticketmaster.com.au.
