Melbourne’s longest running outdoor theatre tradition is back, with The Australian Shakespeare Company set to bring Glenn Elston’s production of The Wind in the Willows to the Royal Botanic Gardens from 19 December 2025 to 25 January 2026.
Now in its 39th year, the show remains a summer favourite for families looking to soak up the season in one of the city’s most scenic spots.
Featuring Kenneth Grahame’s much loved characters Ratty, Mole, Badger, Otter, Portly and of course the unstoppable Mr. Toad, the production blends comedy, music and interactive fun in a way that has kept generations coming back.
Glenn Elston, founder and Artistic Director of The Australian Shakespeare Company, said, “The Wind in the Willows has been delighting families in Melbourne for nearly four decades, and each year it feels just as magical.”
“Seeing eyes light up, hearing their laughter echo through the gardens, and sharing that experience with audiences of all ages—it’s why we do what we do. This summer, we can’t wait to welcome everyone back for adventure, music, and a truly unforgettable outdoor theatre experience.”
Part of the show’s charm is its audience participation. Kids become honorary rabbits, encouraged to wiggle their ears, sing along and call out as the story unfolds. Adults can expect a few cheeky moments too, keeping the show playful and unpredictable from start to finish.
Families are invited to bring picnic rugs, snacks and drinks for a relaxed day or evening on the grass. The performance moves between picturesque pockets of the gardens, turning the show into a small adventure and giving audiences a fresh way to experience the iconic setting.
Tickets start at $25, with group options available. Performances run at 10.30am and 6pm at the Oak Lawn Gate in the Royal Botanic Gardens. For more information, visit www.shakespeareaustralia.com.au.
