Wnter is looking a little sweeter across Victoria, with Ferguson Plarre’s Bakehouses marking an impressive 125 years in business by giving away 10,000 pieces of cake and rolling out a season of budget-friendly bakery favourites.
The celebrations begin on Friday 5 June, when every Ferguson Plarre store across the state will hand out a free slice of birthday cake with any purchase. After that, the bakery chain will continue the birthday festivities throughout winter with rotating weekly specials priced at just $1.25 for Sweet Rewards Club members.
The milestone marks more than a century of the Plarre family serving up cakes, pastries and savoury classics to generations of Victorians. What started as a single cake shop on Puckle Street in Moonee Ponds has grown into almost 80 bakeries across the state, while still remaining family-owned five generations later.
Ferguson Plarre CEO Steve Plarre said the bakery’s long-standing success comes down to consistency and family tradition.
“In a world of trends and viral food moments, Ferguson Plarre has stood strong as a reliable and comforting bakery staple in local communities for years, with almost 80 bakeries across Victoria,” Steve said.
“We know what we’re good at, and we’ve spent 125 years perfecting recipes that have been passed down for five generations of Plarre’s, from vanilla slices and chocolate eclairs to the perfectly flaky sausage roll or tiddly oggie.”
Otto Plarre first opened the original Plarre’s Cakes shop in Moonee Ponds in 1901, with the location still operating today as the bakery’s oldest store. The business later evolved into Ferguson Plarre after the Ferguson and Plarre families joined forces under third-generation baker Ralph Plarre OAM.
Alongside the $1.25 member specials, non-members can also score discounts of up to 30 per cent on selected bakery favourites in stores throughout winter.
