Box Hill South has been chosen as the launch site for Kmart’s brand-new K Home concept store, the first of its kind in Australia.
The new 3800sqm store signals a big shift for the retailer, which is doubling down on affordable homewares, furniture and styling. Rather than the usual mix of fashion, toys and general merchandise found in a standard Kmart, K Home will focus entirely on home living, bringing together the retailer’s expanding range of furniture, storage and décor under one roof.
The concept has already drawn comparisons to Ikea thanks to its room-style displays and showroom-inspired layout designed to encourage browsing and inspiration rather than quick aisle shopping.

Unlike traditional Kmart stores, the Box Hill South location will feature a completely reworked design, including an orange-toned branding palette in place of the retailer’s familiar red and blue look.
Kmart Group chief commercial officer Callum Smith said the new format builds on the growing popularity of the retailer’s home range.
“K home at Box Hill South gives us the opportunity to bring more of our home range into the store and better understand how customers want to shop it,” Smith said.
“Customers have embraced Kmart’s home range for many years, and we’ve continued to grow our furniture offer as customer demand has grown.”

The store will also stock products previously available only online, giving shoppers access to a broader range in person for the first time.
Kmart says the format is designed to make home styling more accessible at a time when household budgets remain under pressure. The layout will include room-set displays, clearer furniture sections and curated styling zones intended to help shoppers visualise products within their own spaces.
The first Australian K Home store is expected to open in Box Hill South within the coming weeks, with the trial likely to shape how Kmart approaches future expansion in the homewares market.
