A beloved Melbourne CBD landmark is set for a grand rebirth. The Crafty Squire, a staple at the corner of Russell and Little Collins Street since 2015, will reopen this winter as Hickens Hotel – a four-level hospitality hub blending heritage charm with modern energy.
The $6.5 million transformation will introduce a rooftop bar, Australia’s first dedicated Carlton Draught bar, and a dynamic sports and entertainment floor, reviving the building’s 1870s identity.

Spanning ground to rooftop, Hickens Hotel promises to be Melbourne’s next go-to social destination. The ground-floor Carlton Lounge will serve Brewery Fresh Carlton Draught Tank Beer straight from a gleaming copper tank, surrounded by retro 70s decor, pool tables, and memorabilia.
“Hickens will be the spot to go to in the city!” says venue manager Giuseppe Lacava.
Upstairs, Level One will offer casual dining and drinks, while Level Two will transform into a high-energy sports bar with LED screens and arcade games. Crowning the venue is a sleek rooftop bar with skyline views—ideal for after-work cocktails and weekend celebrations.

David Stingl, Sales Director of Asahi Beverages, which is the custodian of Carlton Draught, echoes the same eagerness to open, “This venue is more than just a bar – it’s a tribute to Melbourne’s rich brewing heritage that we’ve been part of since the 1860’s. We’re excited for our iconic lineup to have its own home at Hickens Hotel.”
The building’s revival pays homage to its original 1870s namesake, Ebenezer “Abe” Hicken, a famed British boxer and pub owner.
With live sports, nostalgic nods, and fresh draught pours, Hickens Hotel is poised to become Melbourne’s ultimate all-in-one pub experience. Function bookings are now open.
Hickens Hotel is at 127 Russell Street, Melbourne, opening winter 2025.
