A landmark international fashion exhibition is heading to Melbourne’s south east, with The Offbeat Sari set to make its Australian debut at Bunjil Place Gallery from Saturday 21 March 2026.
Developed by London’s Design Museum and conceived and curated by Priya Khanchandani, the exhibition brings together 54 groundbreaking saris loaned from leading designers and studios across India. Expect woven steel, foiled jersey, distressed denim and bold reinventions that challenge what many think they know about the garment.
Bunjil Place has partnered with Liverpool Powerhouse to bring the exhibition to Australian audiences, with the show travelling to Sydney following its Melbourne season.
The exhibition explores how the sari, traditionally a single piece of unstitched fabric reflecting identity, class and culture across South Asia, is being reshaped by designers, weavers and artisans. Contemporary versions include pre draped styles, sari gowns and even pieces crafted from steel, with young urban Indians pairing saris with sneakers and reimagining the garment for everyday life.
“The sari is experiencing what is conceivably its most rapid reinvention in its 5,000-year history,” says curator Priya Khanchandani.
City of Casey Mayor Stefan Koomen says “We’re incredibly proud to be collaborating with Liverpool Powerhouse to debut The Offbeat Sari. With one of the largest South Asian communities in Melbourne, this vibrant exhibition will deeply resonate with our residents and beyond. I encourage everyone to come and experience the bold reinvention of this iconic garment and with free entry to the Bunjil Place Gallery, it’s accessible to all to enjoy”.
The exhibition runs until August, and entry is free.
