A playful world of imagination has opened at NGV International marking Icelandic artist Ragnar Kjartansson’s first-ever exhibition created especially for children.
Children’s Play: Ragnar Kjartansson is being presented alongside Ragnar Kjartansson: Mercy. The world premiere exhibition transforms the gallery into an interactive theatrical playground inspired by the lavish celebrations of Rococo-era European courts and the enduring tradition of dinner and a show.
Young visitors are encouraged to become performers, storytellers and creators as they explore immersive stage sets complete with costumes, props and activities. Three hand-painted theatrical backdrops, including a cosy cabin, a Rococo garden and a snowy forest, provide the setting for children to invent their own performances with friends and family.
The exhibition draws on Kjartansson’s lifelong love of theatre, shaped by growing up as the son of an actor and theatre director. Striped walls, painted curtains, candelabras and the artist’s own illustrations create a whimsical environment where creativity takes centre stage.
Beyond the theatre, children can build colourful cake sculptures using oversized soft cushions inspired by grand banquet feasts, while giant upholstered cakes and still-life food displays encourage imaginative play and drawing activities.

Children will be able to explore, play and create both on the stage and as an audience, introducing young minds to the magnificent world of theatre.”
