The Melbourne Shakespeare Company will present he Victorian premiere of Samuel D. Hunter’s award-winning play, The Whale this June. Making its debut at the Alex Theatre this June, The Whale features a stellar cast including Adam Lyon, Melanie Gleeson, Sebastian Li, Tanya Schneider, and Skye Fellman in her professional debut.
Audiences may be familiar with the 2022 screen adaptation that earned Brendan Fraser an Oscar for Best Actor. The play, written in 2012 explores themes of redemption and unexpected beauty, garnering international acclaim and prestigious awards such as the Lucille Lortel Award for Best Play and the Sky Cooper New American Play Prize.
Set on the outskirts of Mormon Country, Idaho, this gripping play follows Charlie, who hides away in his apartment longing to reconnect with his estranged daughter. When he finally reaches out to her, he encounters a sharp-tongued and deeply unhappy teenager.
Directed by Melbourne Shakespeare Company’s Artistic Director Jennifer Sarah Dean, returning after notable projects like Moulin Rouge! The Musical and The Almighty Sometimes for Melbourne Theatre Company.
The Whale runs from 28 June to 14 July at Alex Theatre, St Kilda. Tickets are on sale now.
