REKOSPECTIVE: The Art of Reko Rennie is now open at the Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia at Fed Square – showcasing the largest collection of Rennie’s work to date.
This retrospective exhibition spans more than two decades of Rennie’s career, featuring over 100 works, including new and never-before-seen pieces.
A major highlight is Remember Me (2020), a monumental 15-metre-wide light sculpture commemorating the frontier wars and the displacement of Aboriginal communities.
The exhibition also includes Rennie’s three-channel film Initiation OA_RR (2021), where a pink Holden Monaro cruises through Melbourne’s west, symbolizing a blend of First Peoples’ cultural practices and Australian car culture.
Rennie’s distinctive style merges traditional Kamilaroi designs with contemporary street art, using mediums such as sculpture, neon, and painting. His work seeks to subvert romanticized ideas of Aboriginal identity while offering powerful commentary on Australia’s colonial history.
The exhibition, which runs until 27 January 2025, also includes iconic pieces like a Rolls Royce covered in pink camouflage and early bronze sculptures. It offers an in-depth look at Rennie’s evolution as a prominent First Nations artist.
Entry is free, and further details can be found on the NGV website – NGV.MELBOURNE
