The redevelopment of the Altona Pier has been recognised at the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects’ annual awards.
The project received a citation in the 2024 AILA National Landscape Architecture Award for Civic Landscape.
Parks Victoria commenced the project to redevelop the pier in 2022 after it was damaged in a severe storm in mid 2021 and closed to the public for safety reasons.
There was a great deal of community anxiety about the future of this much-loved pier which had originally been constructed in 1888 to take people by ferry from the city to view land in the Altona Bay Estate.
The redevelopment was undertaken with the gal to create a modern, safe and functional pier that would be fit-for-purpose for the next 100 years while also respecting the deep community attachment towards the original timber pier.
The awards recognised the project for presenting ” a harmonious blend of history, recreation and modern functionality.”
The designers were commended for having “through thoughtful collaboration, produced a versatile civic space that provides access and enjoyment for a diversity of community uses and users.”
