This summer, the State Library of Victoria will shine as a beacon of queer celebration, transforming into a vibrant hub of creativity, connection, and storytelling for Midsumma 2025.
From 19 January to 6 February, the Library’s bold and diverse program will honor LGBTQIA+ culture through performances, exhibitions, and interactive experiences that promise to inspire and delight.
Families can dive into Hugo’s Rainbow Show, a magical musical adventure hosted by drag king Hugo Grrrl, blending science, storytelling, and celebration of diversity. For all ages, The Story Keepers will enchant with forgotten queer fairytales brought to life through immersive and imaginative performances.
The highlight of the program comes on 6 February with Library Up Late x Midsumma, an electrifying after-hours event featuring live music, DJs, and performances curated by MzRizk.
Guests can revel in Melbourne’s queer history through Melbourne Out Loud: Midsumma Edition, a powerful exhibition of Rennie Ellis’s iconic photographs, documenting decades of LGBTQIA+ resilience and liberation.
With special storytime sessions featuring LGBTQIA+ storytellers and events that celebrate inclusivity, the Library’s Midsumma program reinforces its commitment to fostering diversity while honoring Victoria’s rich queer culture.
State Library Victoria CEO, Paul Duldig, said: ‘Midsumma is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the creativity, resilience and stories of Melbourne’s LGBTQIA+ community.
“At the Library, we are committed to creating a space where everyone feels welcome and valued, and this program is a wonderful reflection of that ethos,” he said.
“It honours the rich history of queer culture while inviting new voices and fresh perspectives to be part of the conversation.”
