Book lovers across Melbourne’s south east are in for a packed month of storytelling, conversation and creativity as WordFest 2026 returns this June with a huge lineup of authors, workshops and literary events.
Presented annually by Monash Council, the much-loved festival once again celebrates the power of books to connect communities through thought-provoking discussions and hands-on experiences.
Among this year’s featured guests is writer and doctor Olivia Ong, who will appear to discuss her deeply personal book Back on My Feet. Olivia said she was excited to join the festival for the first time and connect directly with readers in a community setting.
“I’ve participated in a number of author talks, book launches and speaking events, but I haven’t been part of WordFest before,” Olivia said. “I always value opportunities to connect with readers in a more personal, community-based setting.”
Olivia explained that readers are often eager to dive deeper into the stories behind the books they love.
“The questions I receive are often very heartfelt and thoughtful,” Olivia said. “Readers are usually curious about the story behind the book, what inspired me to write it, the challenges I faced and what I have learned through my journey.
“Given that Back on My Feet is both deeply personal and grounded in my medical expertise, people also ask about resilience, recovery and how they can apply some of the lessons to their own lives.”
The 2026 festival opens with an in-conversation event featuring journalist Cheng Lei alongside writer and former political prisoner Kylie Moore-Gilbert.
Other headline guests include environmentalist Bob Brown, actor Pia Miranda, Olympic swimmer Michael Klim, AFL star Travis Boak and food media favourite Melissa Leong.
The festival will wrap up with the Sir John Monash Lecture presented by acclaimed author and publisher Eric Beecher.
Alongside the author talks, festivalgoers can take part in writing workshops hosted by Demet Divaroren and enter the annual Monash Short Story Writing Competition.
