Following acclaimed international seasons and sold out performances around the world, award-winning contemporary dance work Triptych is heading to Melbourne for its long-awaited Victorian premiere this September.
Created by Bungandidj and Ngarrindjeri choreographer Lewis Major, the production will take over the Fairfax Studio at Arts Centre Melbourne from 22 to 26 September 2026.
Triptych brings together three distinct short works titled Prologue, Unfolding and Epilogue in an evocative fusion of movement, music and light. Performed by four world-class dancers, the mixed bill explores themes of rhythm, connection and the relationship between internal and external worlds through powerful choreography and atmospheric staging.
From humble beginnings as a sheep shearer in regional South Australia, Major has gone on to become one of Australia’s leading choreographic talents with work performed across six continents. Developed following years of collaboration with internationally renowned dancemakers Russell Maliphant OBE and Hofesh Schechter, Triptych has become one of his most celebrated works to date.
“Triptych has toured all over the world for the past two years – 12 countries and over a hundred shows, in fact! — but it always feels best to bring it back to Australian audiences,” said Lewis Major.
“We’ve been planning this Arts Centre Melbourne season since opening night back in 2024, and I’m thrilled that its first time in Melbourne finally gives us the chance to share this work with our friends, family, and colleagues here,” he said.
The production has already collected more than a dozen awards including Best Dance at Adelaide Fringe Festival 2025 and The Spirit of the Fringe Award at Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2024.
